Our Sunday Brunch at Micro Bakery & Kitchen

It has been a while since Ann and I have our Sunday free as we are always busy with a lot of other things. I have been busy on a photography project which I will probably update in a later post and Ann have been taking up sewing classes via Skills Future as she has been wanting to learn how to sew.

Sewing machine and cameras aside, we decided to have brunch last Sunday at an artisanal bakery cafe called Micro Bakery & Kitchen at Serene Centre.

We heard a lot of rave reviews about the former cafe called Woodlands Sourdough but we did not have the time to check it out till it closed down early this year. The team at Micro Bakery & Kitchen took over the premises offering artisanal sourdough bread, small batches of baked goods like brownies as well as great coffee that we had to check the place out.

I have a soft spot for great sourdough bread and it is difficult to find good ones around Singapore. So, our Sunday brunch adventure started with a drive to Serene Centre.

As soon as we found a seat at the open space patio, Ann ordered herself a Tartine, which is basically an open-faced sandwich on one of their artisanal sourdough bread, with pesto spread, chunky mushrooms, tomatoes, Brie de Meaux cheese and salad.

The sourdough bread was crusty on edges, chewy interior and of course the sourness which was not overwhelming. The chunky mushrooms tasted like it was a steak sandwich and the melted Brie gave the Tartine a creamy buttery taste.

I ordered a Tartine too. But mine was their house made Ricotta cheese with charred Roma tomatoes topped with salad and basil on their artisanal sourdough bread.

I have never tried Ricotta cheese that was velvety smooth and creamy at every bite. The Ricotta cheese portion too was generous and I must say I was very impressed that they made it themselves. The charred Roma tomatoes gave the open-faced sandwich a smoky flavour and I loved the fact that it was sprinkled with sea salt flakes to bring out the blandness of the salad.

Finally, we have found a place that serves great sourdough bread in Singapore!

Surprisingly, I was quite full but I felt tempted to try the Kanelbullar that was calling my name at the display window. Kanelbullars are simply cinnamon rolls. The one I had at Micro Bakery & Kitchen had a nice amount of cinnamon, sweetness and had a zesty lemony taste ready to be dipped into our coffee.

Simply amazing end to our brunch!

We were still not done yet. Ann bought the Buckwheat Sourdough Loaf, (yes, the whole loaf) as well as the Sea Salt Cashew Praline Brownie for takeaway.

The Buckwheat Sourdough loaf was for our next week’s breakfast and the Sea Salt brownie was Ann being indulgent and keeping it for her dessert later.

The only downside to our brunch though was the coffee. As we are lactose intolerant, we ordered their flat white with soy milk. Their coffee was intense and strong, however, the soy milk was a bit clumpy to our liking. We think it is probably better if you ordered the Long Black or normal milk coffee if you are not lactose intolerant like us. 😛

Other than that, we were very satisfied with our Sunday Brunch and off we went with our happy bellies to Botanical Gardens for a walk which is just next door!

If you are a fan of sourdough bread and non-factory baked goods, you just have to check Micro Bakery & Kitchen out. Do note, however, they are closed on Mondays & Tuesdays.

Address below. Enjoy your next brunch!
