10 Reasons Why You Should Rent a Car For Your Next Kuala Lumpur Getaway

On our last trip to Kuala Lumpur, Ann and I decided to fly and book a rental car at the airport instead of driving from Singapore. It was one of the best decisions we made for the trip as we had to travel to several places throughout Kuala Lumpur for visiting, leisure as well as attend one of our friend’s wedding.

We flew via Malindo Air to KLIA, pre-booked a vehicle via Rental Cars and got away with some amazing deals via Europcar for a week! For about SGD$40/day, we got ourselves a Proton Saga with all-inclusive insurance and unlimited mileage for our trip.

We could not believe it was this easy and relatively cheap too!

And here we want to share with you 10 reasons why you should rent a car for your next Kuala Lumpur Getaway!

  • No Traffic Jams: We avoided the traffic jams at the Malaysia – Singapore border by flying to Kuala Lumpur instead of driving a car from Singapore. This save us loads of time as well as our sanity and we had more time to spend in Kuala Lumpur instead.
  • Cheap Petrol: For some of our foreigner friends, most of them did not know that Petrol and Diesel are a highly subsidised commodity in Malaysia, therefore when we got our rental car we only topped up once for the week and costs way lower than most cities that we drove before.
  • Cheap Parking: For a big city like Kuala Lumpur, parking costs are quite reasonable. Try to avoid big malls and look for open carparks instead as they can be cheaper. Do also request for free parking when you book your hotel.
  • British Driving System: Steering wheels are on the right, and you drive on the left. We are asked alot about this from our European and American friends. 😛
  • Easy Navigation: Google Maps or Waze are easily downloaded to your smartphones and easy to use to navigate the roads of Kuala Lumpur. Be sure to pack along a car charger for the trip.
  • Good Quality Roads: Kuala Lumpur has good quality roads compared to most major cities. We did not have any problems except for the occasional pot hole or two. 😛

We visited the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia (IAMM)

  • Explore Kuala Lumpur: With the rental car, Ann and I explored Kuala Lumpur checking out museums, restaurants and other interesting sites that we would normally would not have visited.
  • Cheaper than Taxis or Ride Hailing Cabs: As we had to travel to a couple of places like our friend’s wedding in Kuala Lumpur, we calculated that we actually saved alot on transportation by renting a car instead of using taxis. Renting a car also saves you the hassle of haggling cab prices as well as saving time on waiting for a ride hailing cab to pick you up at your “out of the way” destinations.

  • Check out new Food Places: With our Proton Saga, we drove around Kuala Lumpur and explored cafes for brunch as well as restaurants we have been wanting to try.
  • Easy Payment for Toll Roads: Get a Touch N Go card (prepaid card for toll expressway) for all your toll needs instead of payment via cash to avoid queues.

So here are 10 reasons why you should rent a car for your next Kuala Lumpur Getaway. We certainly had a great time exploring Kuala Lumpur with our rented car getting to locations easily and exploring sites we have never visited before.

We hoped that our experiences and tips above have been helpful. Do drop us a comment below if you require more info. You can check out Rental Cars for your next holiday trip too with the search app below.
