Our Ride To Big Fish Small Fish

We cycled on our foldable bicycles from our house in Tampines all the way to Punggol via The Park Connector Network to get to the Big Fish Small Fish. You can’t miss it once you are at Punggol East Container Park because of its bright blue and yellow containers.

They did a great job getting noticed by their great offer of Fish & Crisps. If I were to rank restaurants that I could eat every other day in Singapore, then Big Fish Small Fish will fall into that list.

The restaurant has a myriad of fish that will give your taste buds a treat, and they are Salmon, Seabass, Dory and Haddock. They also have intriguing add-ons in their menu like the XO Shrimps, Fish Skin with Garlic Chilli Dip as well as Salted Egg Calamari with Bonito Flakes to name a few.

There is a counter filled with various kinds of sauces like the usual Chilli Sauce, Salted Egg sauce and Curry Mayo sauce. You can choose any of the sauces you want or just try it all as it is self-service. You are given paper table covers, as well as gloves to ensure your hands are kept clean. The gloves are disposable but try to avoid using them to save the environment!

We ordered the Salted Egg Calamari with Bonito Flakes and Coleslaw as our sides, and once it was served, I couldn’t get enough of the Bonito Flakes that was all over the sauce. The Calamari rings were quite large. However, the taste was not what I had expected. My mouth didn’t get the spring and chewy texture of the calamari. It was rubbery and I didn’t like it.

The Coleslaw, however, gave a nice cool refreshing touch to our palates with all those deep fried stuff around. The Crispy Whitebait that acted as an appetizer was indeed delicious. I could have eaten the Crispy Whitebait over and over again.

The Seabass with crisps blew me away. It was nowhere the deep fried fish I was expecting. The Seabass fish fillet serving was chunky and huge. And we were served with a great portion of potato crisps thinly cut served in a paper cone.

Though the meal may have been greasy, the staff were able to give us the chunky tender flesh and crispy batter of the fish that I love. The batter allowed me to feel the crunch while holding the moist flesh together. The filet was well seasoned, and the variety of sauces did justice to it.

Both Ann and I really enjoyed the chunky Seabass.

Big Fish Small Fish is unlike a lot of Western-owned restaurants. It serves potato crisps instead of fries. The crisps are great with the sauces provided, and they were not too overly seasoned, which I felt was great. This meal was worth every dime that was spent.

Although we may not have liked the Calamari, we would love to eat the Seabass Fish & Crisps over again. It is affordable and comes in a paper cone that is easily portable just like our bicycles! 😛
